While it may seem like the most important thing you need to do to prepare for summer is to pick out the best sunscreen, there is more. As the temperature heats up, your home should be ready to beat the heat. No one wants to come home to a scorching home, an algae-filled pool, or a cracked foundation. Besides getting a standard A/C tune-up and the regular home things you do, here are some other ways to make sure you stay cool this summer:

 

  • Gutter gleam. Your gutters are clogged from all of the leaves that fell during the fall. Keep your gutters from overflowing by having the debris removed.

  • Shingled out. Cold winter temperatures and spring storms can take a toll on your shingles. Avoid finding leaky spots by having your roof inspected. Get any repairs completed as soon as possible to keep your home in tip-top shape.

  • The white stuff. When your windows let in air, your air conditioner has to work harder to keep your home cool. Have the LifeSquire handyman add a fresh coat of caulking around your windows to beat the leaky window heat.

  • Water more than the plants. When the ground under your home dries out from summer heat, it can mess up your home’s foundation. During dry summer days, make sure to water your home’s foundation at least once a week. When in drought, water the foundation several times a week.

  • Fix your tools. During the summer months, you break out a lot of tools and equipment. Have the tune-up on your lawnmower taken care of. Clean your grill before your next meal. Have your pool inspected so that you can spend the summer in the cool water. Whatever tools you use, give them a check before they are regularly used.

  • Waterworks. Freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your plumbing. It is always a good idea to have a plumber come out for a pipe inspection to stop and prevent any leaks.

  • Trim around the bushes. Your trees will bloom and grow all season. Have them trimmed to avoid problems with power lines and other objects that don’t need to be consumed by branches.

  • Streak-free. After the winter weather and spring pollen, your windows aren’t exactly spotless. Book window cleaners to come out and put the shine back in your glass.

  • The cool down. Your attic holds a lot of heat. Before the temperature gets too bad, have your insulation checked. Add extra insulation to your attic to help beat the heat.

You’ve spent a long, hard day at work and you’re ready to come home to relax and kick off your shoes.  You walk in the door of your home and see piles of mail, books in disarray, dirty dishes, and a pile of laundry on the bed. It gets even worse, you’re looking for your newest book and can’t find it. You also can’t find your favorite house slippers. Your home is an unorganized mess, and nothing has a proper home.

We all know that you suffer from stress from finances, your job, and other things happening in your life. When you come home, you want to relax, but when you live in a poorly decorated, extremely cluttered, and disorganized house, it is nearly impossible to relax. Disorganization can lead to reduced happiness levels and increased stress. This article tells why living this way only adds to your stress.

Clutter brings on the stress

It’s hard to imagine that a cluttered house can bring on stress, but it can. When home, you will likely remain in a state of overwhelm as your brain takes in all of the information around you. Once your brain has processed the clutter, you’ll quickly realize how much work you have to do on your home. The more mess you see, the higher the stress levels. Fewer family conflicts

Have you ever gotten into an argument over the location of an item that seems lost? You have one place in mind for that object and your spouse or other family member has another. When that item is needed and cannot be found, this may create and amplify a family conflict. Now that you have found your new place, it’s time to start packing for the big move. Overwhelming right? Even though it sounds like a daunting task, you can get your house packed one box at a time.

Not sure where to start? This is where we come in. Packing isn’t just about throwing your stuff into a box to get it from one place to another. Instead, there are a lot of tricks out there to make your move easier. We thought we would share some of our favorites with you.

We need you, first

Don’t lose your important, need right now, items in a sea of boxes. Consider using clear plastic bins to pack your immediate need items. Using the bins will separate the important stuff from the decorations so that you don’t spend hours hunting for your toilet paper. Pack these bins with items like phone chargers, eating and cooking utensils, important cookware, toilet paper, tools, and other items you will need right after the move. 

Mostly shatterproof

Save money on newspaper and bubble wrap by using your clothes to wrap all of your breakables. You can also use clean socks to wrap to wrap your glasses and stemware.  Also, for added safety, stack your plates vertically like you do in the dishwasher. It helps keep them from breaking.

Who? What? Where?

When packing your boxes, you want to make sure you label them with the items in the box, who the box belongs to, and what room the box goes in. Consider purchasing different colored tape to help make the rooms more distinguishable when unloading. Correct labeling will help the unpacking and organizing be a breeze.  

Unpack by room

All of your boxes will be stacked up and in your way, and this may cause you a bit of anxiety.  But when it comes to unpacking, make sure you unpack by room. Doing this will make the unpacking process much easier and give you a greater feeling of satisfaction than just randomly unpacking boxes.

Saran wrap to the rescue

Avoid the dreaded leakage by using a little saran wrap. Open up your toiletries and liquid items. Take a piece of saran wrap and place it over the opening of the bottle. Replace the lid on the product, and it will help keep the liquids where they belong.

Think outside the bag

Don’t spend time taking your clothes off of the hanger, folding them, and then putting them into a box. Instead, grab some trash bags and slide them over a bundle of clothes hanging on the rod. Tie the bag at the top, and it will make your clothes easy to transport.

Luggage is your friend

We all have those heavy items or items that are an awkward shape making them almost impossible to pack. This is where your luggage comes in handy. If you need to pack something that just won’t fit in a box or would be easier to transport on wheels, put it in your luggage.  Your items will stay safe, and they will be easier to move.

Pack an overnight bag

Don’t get stuck without a toothbrush or a pair of pajamas. When you get into your new home, your stuff will be spread all over the house. Instead of spending hours trying to find your necessities, pack an overnight bag. Also, try to get in the house and clean your kitchen and bathroom before the move. That way you can have a nice long shower after all of the hard work

Recently the LifeSquire handyman grabbed his tool belt and came to our office one night after work to share some of his knowledge. At LifeSquire, we do a lot of tasks for our clients, but we also always strive to push the boundaries and do more. So when our handyman said he’d like to teach us some tricks of the trade, we dropped the grocery bags (not really) and joined him for a learning session.

After the class, we decided the tips we learned were so valuable that we had to share them with you. So here are ten handy tips from our handyman.

Picture perfect

  • When hanging a picture or something else on the wall, always put the nail at a little bit of an angle to take the pressure off of the drywall.

  • Don’t just hang a picture on the wall with a nail, use a hook as well. Using a hook will keep the sheetrock from tearing. Make sure you check the weight limitations for the hooks.

  • Make picture hanging easier when you mark the top of the picture on the wall. Use a pencil and draw a line at the top of the frame. Measure, on the picture, from the top of the frame to the hanger and use this measurement for proper hook placement. Make sure you put the bottom of the hook at the measured mark so that the picture will be in the proper location.

Wall repair

  • If you need to fix cracks in your walls, fill them with painter’s caulking. Make sure it isn’t silicone based, otherwise you won’t be able to paint over it.

  • Holes in wood are easily fixed with the help of water putty. Once the putty is dry, just sand and paint over the spot. It’s an instant fix.

  • Do you need to touch up some paint, but forgot what color your walls are? Pick a place in the room that is a low traffic area. Use a box knife to cut into the wall until the tip of the blade is white. Cut a square that is at least an inch wide. Peel the paint off and take it to your paint store. They can analyze it and get you the matching color. Use spackle to patch the spot and paint over it with your new paint.

Miscellaneous tips

  • Toothpicks are for more than your teeth. If you have a screw that won’t stay, add a toothpick. A stripped screw can be really annoying, so just put a toothpick or two in the hole before putting the screw back in. The toothpicks will help secure the screw.

  • Clogged drains are an easy fix when you have a wet-dry vacuum. Remove the drain cover and use the vacuum to remove the clogs. If you need extra suction, seal around the nozzle with a wet rag.

  • When the lights go out, you can easily find your flashlight if you wrap glow in the dark tape around the handle. The tape will glow for about 8 hours.

  • Get light scratches out of wood with the help of a walnut. Break the walnut open and rub it on the scratch several times. Rub your finger along the scratch to heat up the oil the walnut left. Once it’s warm, the wood will soak up the oil, and the scratch will fade.

Here are five things you aren’t disinfecting, and why you should

It’s no secret that Influenza has hit us hard this year. Schools have closed for sick days, hospitals have long wait times, and there is a high chance that someone in your family has been ill this season. Recently, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that 42 states in the United States have high Influenza activity; Oklahoma is included.

Even though you may want to wear a mask and gloves whenever you walk outside of your bubble, we hate to break the news that your home could be just as germy as the public places you visit. Yep, you read that right. You may be going after the normal spots with the Clorox Wipes to prevent another round of illness, but have you considered sanitizing these five areas?

Bottom of shoes

Your shoes carry you everywhere, so it only makes sense that they also carry a lot of germs. Don’t bring the school playground or the grocery store germs into your house. Instead, leave your shoes at the door and take a few minutes to sanitize the bottoms before they get too far into your house. A simple way to disinfect your shoes is by spraying Lysol on the bottom or using an antibacterial wipe.

Television and Game System Remotes

When the illness hits, the last thing you want to do is get out of bed. So what happens? You lie in bed, and you watch television or play video games. And while you are mending, you keep using the remotes, but do you ever sanitize them? Another family member may grab those remotes, and then your germs have spread. Your remotes are considered “high traffic areas,” but they usually don’t get a lot of cleaning attention.

Toothbrushes

Even though you’re sick, the dentist still makes you brush your teeth. But every time you pop your toothbrush into your mouth you are facing possible reinfection. Cleaning your toothbrush will help lower the risk of getting sick again. Just boil your toothbrush for three minutes, and it will kill most of the germs hiding in your brush.

Doorknobs and Light Switches

While touching doorknobs or light switches may not seem like the culprits of a germ infestation, it’s very possible that they are. Target the high traffic areas like bedrooms and bathrooms first, and use an antibacterial wipe for quick sanitization.

Cell phone

Your cell phone goes everywhere with you; you constantly use it without washing your hands, you may even take it into the bathroom with you. Your cell phone can be germ carrier without you even realizing it. You should do a deep clean on your phone to get rid of all the hidden bacteria. Unfortunately, you can’t just spray a cleaner on your phone and call it good, so make sure you follow instructions from the manufacturer before you begin.

The bottom line is that germs are everywhere, and it may be hard to keep them out of your house, but you do have a fighting chance. Keep the flu out, and stay healthy. If you need help with sanitizing your home, your personal assistant can take on that task.  Stay healthy, everyone.

There is a thrill in providing service for others, there is pride in accomplishing multiple tasks a day, and there is a love for being a support system for others.

Being a personal assistant is a demanding job that will keep a person on their toes, but it is a crucial role to fill. There are just some things a personal assistant can do better, and we want to share those things with you.

Scheduling mavens

If there is one thing that personal assistants are professionals at, it’s time management. They not only make sure they have time to complete all of their client’s tasks each and every day, but they also schedule appointments, travel, and service appointments regularly. They can keep track of when your pet needs to see the groomer, when your child has to be picked up from school, and when your car needs maintenance. Sure, they may use planners to keep them on track, but you can’t slide an extra meeting into a busy day without them noticing. And when they see it, they will make sure you can fit that meeting into your schedule easily.

Organization masterminds

We’ve all found ourselves in a disorganized and cluttered home from time-to-time. Life gets in the way, you get super busy, and the house tends to be the first thing knocked off of the list. But for a personal assistant, organization always tops the list. You may not even realize your bookshelf is a complete mess, but your assistant will. A client could almost think their personal assistant is a mind reader. And truthfully, a good personal assistant does just that. They can anticipate the needs of their client’s without being told. Have a big trip coming up? It is likely that your personal assistant will have your luggage out, products you needs for your trip ready, and itineraries printed before you even think to do those things. That’s just one example of the many things you’re thinking, but don’t have to vocalize to your assistant. They also know how to read their client’s facial expressions. This allows them to know when the best time to approach a client is. They aren’t in the business to pester, so they have to know when the timing is right.

Knowledge seekers

With a variety of jobs comes a wealth of experience. A personal assistant craves the change, but also the knowledge they need to fulfill their tasks. Whether it is learning a new software so that they can work in their client’s office or it is learning how to trim a rose bush, personal assistants seek all of the knowledge.

Pet lovers

If you want a person that loves your pets as you do, you won’t find anyone better than your personal assistant. They are there to not only love and snuggle them but to help you take care of them. Does Fluffy need a vet appointment? Your personal assistant will make sure she is taken care of. They want your pets healthy and happy too.

The errand bosses

Whether it is making a list and heading to the grocery store, going to the post office, or returning purchased products, your personal assistant has you covered. They spend their work day doing the things you don’t have time to get done or the things you want to give up so that you will have more time with your family and friends.
