With the everyday hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to neglect yourself. After spending extra hours in the office, your nights end up looking like a whirlwind of activity from cooking to wrangling children into bed by bedtime. And after all that, your bed and Netflix look more and more attractive.

While it is extremely important to get those tasks done on a daily basis, it is even more important to make time for some self-care. Now you’re probably thinking, I don’t have the time to spend days at the spa or going on regular shopping sprees, but self-care is more than just an outing.  Here are some self-care ideas to add to your daily to-do list:

Write about it

No matter how bad your day has been, there will always be something that makes you feel grateful.  So whether it is the fact that you are still breathing or you won the lottery, grab a journal and write down five positive things in your life each day. When you write down positive things in your life, it puts more emphasis on the things you are grateful for instead of the stressors in your life. Focus on the good.

A positive morning

Start every day with something positive. Whether you read inspirational quotes, stories or you indulge in your favorite coffee drink, try to start each morning with something that makes you feel good. You can do this while sipping your morning coffee and not have to add any extra time to your already busy morning.

Give back

If you want a quick positivity boost, do something for someone else. Volunteer once a month or help a friend or loved one out with a project they can’t do alone. Sharing your talents and giving back to the community is good for your soul.

Go on a technology detox

In most situations, you can’t imagine turning your cellphone off and taking a break from social media, but sometimes one way to make the craziness of the world stop turning is to take a break from the center of it. As much as you love social media, it can play a real role in your mood. Don’t be afraid to take a break, even if it is just for one hour.

Just say no

To all of the overachievers out there, it is okay to say no when someone asks to make plans with you. We often find ourselves wanting to do more than we are actually capable of doing. So while you don’t have to give a solid no, don’t be afraid to ask for that night out for a later date.

Playtime with pets

Pets have this furry covered way of soothing the soul. When you spend time petting and playing with your pets, you’ll easily forget the stresses of the day. If you don’t have a pet, visit your local rescue for all the playtime you can handle.

Have a self-date

It may sound a little weird, but you should always date yourself. Spend an hour alone doing something that feeds your soul. Maybe it is taking the time to read that new book you’ve been dying to start or relaxing in a bubble bath with a glass of wine. Do something that is for you and only you.

Just dance

Turn on your favorite song, and dance like no one is watching. Not only is music good for your soul, but dancing can put a little bounce in your step. Never deny yourself a mini dance party.

Take a road trip

There are likely some beautiful places within a short drive of you. Do some research for local sites to see and plan a short day trip over the weekend. So when the weather is nice, load up the car with your family or some close friends and hit the road.

Get in the right mindset

Download a meditation app on your phone and start your mornings with some peaceful relaxation before hitting the stress-filled traffic on your way to work.  Better yet, get to work a little early and listen to your meditation app before heading into the office. You’ll be a lot calmer, and it will be easier to start tackling your day.

A little goes a long way

Self-care is vital to your well-being. It doesn’t have to be an all-day affair to be considered self-care.   Just do a little something every day of the week, and you’ll quickly feel that stress fog lift. Make sure you add self-care to your to-do list daily and make it a priority in your life.

Imagine this. You’ve spent a long, hard day at work and you’re ready to come home to relax and kick off your shoes.  You walk in the door of your home and see piles of mail, books in disarray, dirty dishes, and a pile of laundry on the bed. It gets even worse, you’re looking for your newest book and can’t find it. You also can’t find your favorite house slippers. Your home is an unorganized mess, and nothing has a proper home.

We all know that you suffer from stress from finances, your job, and other things happening in your life. When you come home, you want to relax, but when you live in a poorly decorated, extremely cluttered, and disorganized house, it is nearly impossible to relax. Disorganization can lead to reduced happiness levels and increased stress. This article tells why living this way only adds to your stress.

Clutter brings on the stress

It’s hard to imagine that a cluttered house can bring on stress, but it can. When home, you will likely remain in a state of overwhelm as your brain takes in all of the information around you. Once your brain has processed the clutter, you’ll quickly realize how much work you have to do on your home. The more mess you see, the higher the stress levels. When your home is organized, and each item has a home, you will save time looking for items, but also you will feel a sense of peace in your nice calming home.

Not everyone sticks by the ‘contact first before showing up at your house’ rule, and you may have an unexpected doorbell ringer. Other times your kids beg to have friends over after school without notice. The last-minute visitor is a real obstacle when your home is an unorganized mess. Once you’re aware of your visitor, you’ll begin to feel your stress levels increase. You’ll likely see things you find so horribly placed and wonder if your guest notices them as well. While they probably don’t care about what kind of condition your house is in, you will feel like they do.

Increased exercise

What? An organized house can increase your exercise? The answer is, yes. How? The biggest barrier to living a healthy lifestyle is a lack of time. As adults, we have a lot on our plates and gym time often gets put on the back burner. When you are living an organized life, you will have more free time to take that spin class or yoga class you’ve had your eye on. You won’t be coming home to cleaning and organization projects instead.

Fewer family conflicts

Have you ever gotten into an argument over the location of an item that seems lost? You have one place in mind for that object and your spouse or other family member has another. When that item is needed and cannot be found, this may create and amplify a family conflict. When everything has a place, the chance of arguments happening because  you can’t find your keys, your favorite pair of shoes, or even your tax documents will significantly decrease.

How do you fix it?

Now that you know why you need to organize your house, you may not know where to start. You’ll start with going through your items and donating what you don’t need. From there, you find containers and places to put items that are left.

Here are five things you aren’t disinfecting, and why you should

It’s no secret that Influenza has hit us hard this year. Schools have closed for sick days, hospitals have long wait times, and there is a high chance that someone in your family has been ill this season. Recently, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that 42 states in the United States have high Influenza activity; Oklahoma is included.

Even though you may want to wear a mask and gloves whenever you walk outside of your bubble, we hate to break the news that your home could be just as germy as the public places you visit. Yep, you read that right. You may be going after the normal spots with the Clorox Wipes to prevent another round of illness, but have you considered sanitizing these five areas?

Bottom of shoes

Your shoes carry you everywhere, so it only makes sense that they also carry a lot of germs. Don’t bring the school playground or the grocery store germs into your house. Instead, leave your shoes at the door and take a few minutes to sanitize the bottoms before they get too far into your house. A simple way to disinfect your shoes is by spraying Lysol on the bottom or using an antibacterial wipe.

Television and Game System Remotes

When the illness hits, the last thing you want to do is get out of bed. So what happens? You lie in bed, and you watch television or play video games. And while you are mending, you keep using the remotes, but do you ever sanitize them? Another family member may grab those remotes, and then your germs have spread. Your remotes are considered “high traffic areas,” but they usually don’t get a lot of cleaning attention.

Toothbrushes

Even though you’re sick, the dentist still makes you brush your teeth. But every time you pop your toothbrush into your mouth you are facing possible reinfection. Cleaning your toothbrush will help lower the risk of getting sick again. Just boil your toothbrush for three minutes, and it will kill most of the germs hiding in your brush.

Doorknobs and Light Switches

While touching doorknobs or light switches may not seem like the culprits of a germ infestation, it’s very possible that they are. Target the high traffic areas like bedrooms and bathrooms first, and use an antibacterial wipe for quick sanitization.

Cell phone

Your cell phone goes everywhere with you; you constantly use it without washing your hands, you may even take it into the bathroom with you. Your cell phone can be germ carrier without you even realizing it. You should do a deep clean on your phone to get rid of all the hidden bacteria. Unfortunately, you can’t just spray a cleaner on your phone and call it good, so make sure you follow instructions from the manufacturer before you begin.

Ever find yourself living a 24/7 routine? I think we all have been there. Between meetings, phone calls, deadlines, family life, friends, entertaining, ball games, and trying to get at least a few hours of sleep, there isn’t much time left for personal time. Instead of taking a little time for peace and quiet, we often find ourselves pushing forward and trying our hardest to succeed at this thing called life.

While this may seem like the plan to success, it can lead to a lot of negatives. In fact, not taking the time to relax will increase your stress levels. As your stress levels increase, your health, your behavior, and your mood can be affected.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “You may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia or your decreased productivity at work. But stress may actually be the culprit.” 

If you let your stress go unchecked, many aspects of your life start to feel the pain. But when you are stressed, how do you fight it? The key is to relax. Here are some tips on how to improve your quality of life by relaxing:

Schedule time to relax

You add meetings and business trips to your calendar, so why not add relaxation time? If you do not add relaxation time to your schedule, it will most likely never happen. Try to schedule a few times a week for reading a book, a nice long bubble bath, gardening, watching your favorite television show, or anything else you find relaxing. While it may be difficult to add extra tasks to your schedule, you will not regret it.

Get some fresh air

Do you spend your lunch break indoors in a break room? Consider taking your lunch outdoors. The fresh air and Vitamin D will improve your mood and happiness levels. If you have extra time after your delicious meal, try adding a walk to your routine. If you tend to skip your lunch break, consider adding outdoor time after work. The fresh air and exercise will be good for you. Have a pet? Spend some quality time with them. You might be surprised how good a pet can make you feel.

Do the bad stuff first

Create a to-do list at the beginning of your day that includes all of your responsibilities. Once you know what you have to do, start with the tasks that you are least looking forward to completing. Getting these tasks done early will ensure that your day will only improve.

Meditate

One of the best ways to clear your mind is through meditation. It allows you to improve your concentration and increase your self-awareness. Meditation will help you find your focus so that you can have a productive day.

Automate your bills

Take another task off of your to-do list by automating all of your bills. Set your utility bills, car payment, mortgage, credit cards, student loans, and any other bills you can to auto-pay. Eliminating as many tasks as possible will be a large weight off of your shoulders.

Take care of yourself

Dress well, get your hair done, and treat yourself. Doing things to take care of yourself will boost your happiness three-fold. Have you heard that saying, when you look good, you feel good? It is entirely true. So make sure you schedule those salon appointments, trips to the mall, and that pedicure you’ve been wanting.

Get a massage

When your stress levels get out of control, one of the best things you can do is get a massage. There is something about a massage parlor that is instantly relaxing. Maybe it is the music, the fresh smell, or the anticipation of the massage, but there is something to be said about the parlor. Once you get in the room and your massage starts, you will feel the tension in your body and the stress melt away.

Take up a hobby

Doing or learning something you enjoy will reduce your stress and better your mood. It also makes scheduling you time a bit easier. Pick out something you enjoy doing or want to do and find a local class. Not only will you have a great time, you will also meet new people and learn a new skill.
