Pantry Overflow

Have you ever been looking in the pantry and you find that one can of beans in the back corner of the pantry only to ask yourself, “When did I buy this?” or better yet, “When did this expire?!?” Maybe you’ve wanted to make cookies one day and you know that you have that right spice somewhere in that spice cabinet that seems to black hole for every expensive spice you’ve ever owned. We’ve all been there, and we’ve all vowed to get our kitchens organized and stop wasting food. But the reality is it can be an overwhelming task. Here are some bite sized ways to avoid kitchen clutter and wasting food.

Clean up, clean up.

The first thing to do is to clean out your pantry and refrigerator. If it’s too overwhelming do one shelf/drawer a day. Throw away anything that is expired, and if you aren’t going to eat something donate it. There’s no point keeping that can of spam for old time’s sake. ;)When cleaning your refrigerator, check the expiration date on everything. It’s so easy to forget that soy sauce and mustard have an expiration date that you definitely want to pay attention to.

Don’t forget to make a plan.

There’s a saying that goes, “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.” While you may not be “failing” in your kitchen, a good meal plan can go a long way. When you take the time to meal plan you will only be buying the things that you need, and therefore will avoid wasting food. As an added bonus meal planning takes stress off of you at the end of the day. No more wondering what you can make with what you have and then opting for pizza instead. A well thought out meal plan provides structure and takes the guess work out of diner. Your days are crazy enough without that added stress. Here is our printable to help.

Just say no to plastic bags.

We all love plastic bags. They are so helpful, but when they are used for food storage they can become an eyesore, and they are more susceptible to bugs and to food being ruined if they aren’t closed properly. If you take the time to buy some airtight clear plastic containers your pantry and cabinets cannot only look beautiful, but your food will last longer. Check out Oxo brand containers, they are some of our favorites.

Close your eyes and just visualize how beautiful and clutter free your kitchen can be if you just tackle these three simple steps. No more searching for the cardamom, you can take back control of your kitchen!
